i don't think Emacs could be created in a closed source enviorment. or rather it never would and be widely used. one of the biggest features of the architecture is it's extendability. it can difficult to extend a system if the internal workings are unknown. i could see a software company buliding something similar for interenal use if tasks that were needed could vary from day to day but i see that as more of an internal tool then a marketable product.
